Approximately 1/3 of visual display terminal operators report back and neck complaints, thus, research on optimal workstation parameters are needed. The objectives of this study were to assess the effects of monitor height, chair type, and their interaction on back/neck electromyography (EMG), perceived discomfort, and posture shifts during data entry tasks. Two levels of monitor height (based on anthropometrics) and chair type (based on cost and features) were assessed. No effect of workstation configuration (monitor height/chair type) was found; with the exception of the low monitor/high chair configuration generating increased low back muscle activity. Task significantly affected posture shifts and perceived discomfort.
